Mazda6 – The Pure Form Of Efficiency

MAZDA always seeks elegant, innovative engineering solutions.
So it’s no surprise that Mazda6 features groundbreaking technology to get the most out of every drop of fuel, with no compromise in the exciting driving performance.
It starts with i-ELOOP, a revolutionary retake on the concept of regenerative braking-capturing the energy lost when braking and saving it as electric power.
Then there’s i-stop, the idling stop system with a characteristic Mazda improvement, it’s faster and smoother.
And of course, Mazda has superior aerodynamics to cut through the air more efficiently, saving fuel and enhancing handling. It all adds up to efficiency at the service of enjoyable driving action.
In a typical car, about 10 per cent of the engines output is used to drive the alternator and generate electricity which is then stored in a lead-acid battery.
It’s inefficient, so Mazda developed a better way- the i-ELOOP regenerative braking system.
I-ELOOP captures the energy lost during deceleration and saves it as electrical power in a revolutionary high-capacity Electric Double Layer Capacitor (EDLC).
The moment you step off the accelerator, Mazda forward momentum drives the alternator and starts charging the EDCL which reaches full charge in just seven to ten seconds.
Then when you step on the accelerator again, the stored electricity is used to power the cars electrical equipment. Its virtually free energy!
Mazda’s i-stop idling stop system automatically shuts the engine down when you come to a complete halt after braking, saving the fuel wasted when in traffic or at a signal to improve fuel economy by as much as five per cent.
Release the brake pedal and fuel is injected directly into the cylinder ready for an almost instantaneous restart: just 0.35 seconds for SKYACTIV-G engines and 0.4 seconds for SKYACTIV-D 2.2.
What’s more is i-stop uses combustion energy rather than the starter motor; restarts are both quicker and smoother.
Mazda6 has a drag coefficient of just 0.27, one of the best in its class, thanks to wide-ranging measures to smooth airflow above, below and at the sides of the body.
In particular, smooth airflow under the car was achieved by an engine undercover, centre floor covers, a tunnel cover and front and rear defectors.
