The youths of Wainibuka did not want to use Tropical Cyclone Winston as an excuse and have already moved into the second and third phase of their rehabilitation effort.

Thirty youths of Nasautoka, Nasau, Nabouva, Nasaibitu, Namoka, Nayavu and Naqia villages attended a four-day empowerment training organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Nayavu, which ended yesterday.

“Wainibuka was one of the severely affected areas from TC Winston,” Kiliaoni Vunivalu of Namoka village youth club said.

“Yes, it did spoil our houses and farms, however, most of us have left all that happened behind us and we will soon reap the rewards of our resilience and hard work.

“Most of our farms were affected, however, we have resolved to double our efforts and plant even more.”

He said, they are stronger than Winston and are committed to improving their livelihood through their produce.

Mr Vunivalu was part of the training.

“It is a pity that only 30 were able to attend this training. If it was up to me, I will get every youth from every village to attend.

“The training is so useful and so informative and will indeed raise our production and commitment to another level.” Mr Vunivalu said.

Principal Youth officer eastern division, George Francis, while closing the training reminded the youths to use their resources wisely and ensure they benefit from it.

“The Ministry is committed towards empowering young Fijians, so you can boldly face your future with confidence, and are equipped with the necessary life-skills and knowledge to maintain a positive lifestyle,” Mr Francis said.

He said such training is conducted around Fiji for young people and the onus was on the individual youth to practise and apply what they learn.

“I hope this training will be of good use and we look forward to receiving positive and success stories from you all after this training.”
