Science Students Invent Energy Powerhouse

In a bid to showcase awareness of our environment and talents of physics, a group of year 11 students of Sangam Sadhu Kuppuswamy Memorial College (SSKMC) in Nadi created an energy power house.
The model is one of the entries that have been submitted in the 2016 Energy saver competition (western division) organised by the Department of Energy under its Public Outreach Programme.
Head of Department – Industrial Arts Sarnesh Kumar said: “Looking at the past trend in the western side with the weather condition due to Tropical Cyclone Winston, we planned to do this project.”
The project, named Asha, cost around $4500.
It also took the team about one and a half month to complete it.
“In these projects we have got a power house, a cart and a trailer. The powerhouse is the one constructed with the panel.”
He said they were all multi-purpose and the powerhouse supplied its energy.
The powerhouse has also been used to provide electricity in a wing of about six to seven classrooms’ lights, multimedia and fans.
He said they also used it for outdoor assemblies.
The cart is totally run by battery which is charged by the Powerhouse.
“The trailer is there to be used by the handyman to collect grass and moving about the premises, it will be used by security when patrolling around the premises at night,” he said.
Four students were involved full time in this project and they came up with the idea.
Mr Kumar said this project was an ongoing project by the Department of Energy, whereby they designed Energy models mainly in respect to creating Energy sources.
Meanwhile, the school was placed second in last year’s National Energy competition where they created a hydro-energy model.
