Kadavu Four Drug Accused Fronts Court

Four men yesterday appeared in the Suva Magistrates Court charged with unlawful cultivation of illicit drugs.

The matter was called before Chief Magistrate Usaia Ratuvili.

It is alleged that on September 27, during the Fiji Police Force ‘Operation Cavuraka’ found Kadavu natives including Nabukelevu-i-Ra villagers Tevita Bakata, Isei Mana and Keni Soro; and Nasau villager Sanivalati Korotini, without lawful authority, cultivated marijuana.

Bakata is alleged, on the day in question, had been cultivating 17 plants weighing 17.1grams; Mana is alleged to have cultivated one plant weighing 1.6grams; Soro is alleged to have grown 13 plants weighing 13.5grams; and  Korotini is alleged to have cultivated two plants weighing in at 5.3grams.

Police Prosecutor Divisional Prosecution Officer Fishi Nasario served first and second phase disclosures and objected to bail as the matter was of public interest.

Mr Nasario said the public could not afford for these people to continue cultivating drugs.

All four accused chose to be represented by the Legal Aid lawyer.

Mr Ratuvili told the prosecution and defence that all affidavits should be filed by tomorrow.

The case has been adjourned to Friday, October 7 for bail application hearing.
