Families, tenants escape unharmed; two flats partially destroyed.

Three National Fire Authority trucks helped avert a major house fire disaster at Fletcher Road in Vatuwaqa yesterday morning.

The house, which is divided into flats, was partially destroyed.

“I’m just relieved that no was hurt and everyone is alive,” said a distraught landlord, Sawastika Kumari.

“We were sleeping at around 4 O’clock in the morning when my son woke me up,” said tenant Anil Sharma, whose front flat was partially destroyed.

“I heard broken glasses and saw smoke and immediately woke up the whole family, and we escaped through the front door,” said 18-year-old Amitesh Narayan.

The family contacted NFA, who managed to contain the fire from spreading to the third flat.

“The fire team saved the front flat from being completely destroyed along with the two joined flats,” said chief fire officer, Qionilau Moceitai.

Those who were in the flats at the time of the fire, escaped unharmed.

NFA investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire.
