The Minister for Education, Mahendra Reddy, says he will find out why different schools are pushing for different school constitutions when all should be in-line with the 2013 Fijian constitution.

This was after a suggestion was made to him by the chairperson of Sigatoka Special School, Coral Kennedy, to have one common constitution for the schools nationwide.

Ms Kennedy spoke to Mr Reddy during the question and answers session of the Fiji National Council of School Managements Meeting at Sigatoka Andhra Sangam College in Sigatoka, yesterday.

“We now have one constitution in the country for Fijians, so why is it necessary for individual schools to have conflicting constitutions that are not in line with the 2013 constitution?” Ms Kennedy asked.

Mr Reddy said they would find out why and he was not aware of it.

He asked Ms Kennedy to email him the name of the schools so he could look into the matter.

“That is the reason why we had Constitution day and we sent a small write up to schools, teachers and principals to talk about the Preamble to the children so that they understand all the bill of rights,” Mr Reddy said.

Ms Kennedy said she came across such issues at different forums whereby different school organisations have been pushing for different constitutions for schools.

Meanwhile, Mr Reddy has approved a sum of $20,000 to Sigatoka special school to purchase a vehicle for which the school is in dire need.

The rest of the cost will be added by the school’s management.
