Police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro, has urged road users to take ownership in ensuring that our roads are safe.

“The Police and the Land Transport Authority are fully utilising all the relevant services to minimise road mishaps, however members of the public need to practice precautionary measures in trying to prevent accidents in whatever way they can,” Ms Naisoro said.

She said this after three passengers and a driver came at close range with the worst yesterday when the vehicle veered off the road and landed in the river.

The driver was alleged to have been asleep. The incident happened at Velovelo in Lautoka.

Lachman Kumar was on his way to work when he witnessed the incident unfold before him.

“The car was speeding and it went underneath the bridge,” Mr Kumar said.

“Those who were standing nearby tried to bring them out of the car. One of the ladies, her face was badly hurt and was bleeding. The Police came and they were taken to the hospital.

Ms Naisoro said the incident happened at around 7am.

She said the driver was alleged to have been asleep in the rental while heading towards Lautoka with three passengers onboard.
