A problem with the  conveyor belt halted operations at the Lautoka Sugar Mill for 19 hours on Tuesday through to Wednesday.

Fiji Sugar Corporations General Manager Operations, Mikaele Biukoto, confirmed said the conveyor belt caused the breakdown from 8am on Tuesday till 3am yesterday (Wednesday).

Mr Biukoto said operations at the three mills were running normally at present.

Meanwhile, Sugar Cane Growers Council chief executive, Sundresh Chetty, said about 230 inmates have been deployed into the cane belts in the Western and Northern Division.

He said this was to assist the growers harvest cane.

Mr Chetty said some growers were still facing problems with harvesting.

“So what we are doing is those gangs who are near finishing on certain farms are now being mobilised to help those who were facing harvesting problems,” he said.

Mr Chetty said cane supply has been good to all the cane mills.
