Fiji One crew were filming outside Nasinu court at the time.

The Fijian Media Association has condemned the alleged attacks on a TV crew yesterday while doing their work outside the Nasinu Magistrates Court.

The Fiji One journalists, Sofaia Koroitanoa and Shanal Shivan, and cameraman Ronyl Narayan, were on duty at Nasinu when two sons of an accused allegedly attacked them.

The president of the Fijian Media Association, Nemani Delaibatiki, said: “The alleged intimidation and threats of violence against the two Fiji TV journalists and a cameraman is deplorable and totally unacceptable when the safety of media professionals is in jeopardy while doing their job.

“We live in a democratic country and media freedom is one of the pillars of our democracy and journalists are free to do their job.

“An attack on journalists is therefore an attack on democracy. We understand the matter has been reported to the Police and we are confident the processes of the law will take their own course.”

The Fiji One journalists and a cameraman were allegedly attacked by two sons of a woman charged with aiding the offence of rape.

It is alleged that they threatened Ms Koroitanoa not to take pictures or else they would come after her.

It is also alleged that they had pushed the camera as Mr Narayan was trying to take shots of the accused person.

A Police complaint has been lodged and the two people who allegedly attacked the TV crew were given a verbal warning.
