SODELPA party leader Sitiveni Rabuka says there is no progress in efforts to resolve a rift over the Parliamentary allowance hike.

He declined to comment further.

But it explains why no statement has been issued after a meeting in Suva on Wednesday.

Mr Rabuka chaired the frosty meeting during which MPs who voted for the allowance hike vigorously defended their decision.

They even brandished an email from Mr Rabuka, which seemed to show he had given them his blessing.

They queried the letter from president, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, which was delivered to the MPs on the morning of the vote in Parliament.

The letter gave a directive that MPs oppose the motion because it was “inappropriate” in light of the rebuilding after Cyclone Winston.

They had already decided to vote for the motion when they received the letter because the old allowance was not enough to allow them to do party work.

Explanation

Those who defied the directive were required to explain to the party. The defiant MPs did that on Wednesday.

They wanted to know who decided for the letter to be written.

Ratu Naiqama did not attend the meeting. It is understood he did not want to aggravate the situation.

Ratu Naiqama and general secretary Adi Litia Qionibaravi, could not be reached for comments last night.

Adi Litia was supposed to issue a media statement.

A party delegation had presented SODELPA’s ireguregu to the late Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi on Bau Island yesterday.
