Former world No. 1 Vijay Singh scored a two under par 70 during round one of the Fiji International at the Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course yesterday.

He is tied in 19th spot alongside 17 golfers including Heath Slocum from USA, Paul Barjon (France), Lukas Nemecz (Austria), Jamie Hook (Australia),  Braden Becker and Andrew Evans.

Nicknamed ‘The Big Fijian’ he believes he can do the magic during round two this morning.

Singh, who designed the course, holds the course record of 7 under par 65 which he shot last year.

“The first round was more enjoyable to play. There were no howling winds and at least you could control your ball and get the right club for a change,” he said.

He managed to par 12 holes, four birdies and two bogeys.

“I played solid but made couple of errors.

“I missed a birdie shot on five, and couple of more out there I had chances to but I guess everybody is going to miss some today.

“It could have been better, first round 70 is not bad. Hopefully it stays like this.

“If it gets any windier then we will deal with it.”

However the 53-year old thinks the course is going to have low scores.

“The pins are in more spots that I haven’t seen before because the wind conditions and they can play the different pins. The course is playing nice.

“It is only the first day and there is a long way to go. Conditions like this you are supposed to do well.”

Singh tees-off at 11.20 alongside Australians Jason Scrivener and Michael Sim.
