Three Fijians studying in Busan City, South Korea are safe after Typhoon Chaba battered parts of the city with violent winds and heavy rain on Wednesday.

Joji Wata, who is currently pursuing his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at Korea Maritime and Ocean University, Yeongdo in Busan, said he was lucky that nothing serious happened to him.

The 27-year-old said the storm hit around 6am (Wednesday, South Korea time), which brought in heavy rain and strong winds.

“My university is on an island so we caught the brunt of the storm,” he said

Mr Wata said by mid-day (South Korea time), the storm died down.

Two other Fijian students, Justin Hickes and Sunia Loga who study Classical Music at Kosin University in Busan shared similar incidents.

Mr Hickes said: “We got an emergency alert that school was closed and that the typhoon was going to hit us around 10am (Wednesday, South Korea time).

“At 10.30am today (Wednesday), winds were so strong that it blew over this huge crane that fell over and damaged our university dormitory causing a lot of panic among the students.

Mr Hickes also confirmed that they were safe.

Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Robin Nair yesterday confirmed that they have not received any casuality reports of Fijians from the Fiijan Embassy in South Korea.

“I haven’t heard anything so we will have to contact them and see if there’s been any issues that we should be aware of,” he said.
