The organisers of the Vodafone Back to Levuka Carnival is giving back to the community on Ovalau.

The four day carnival was open on Wednesday by the Director of Heritage and Arts Lusiana Fotofili.

Carnival organising committee chairperson Anne Murgan said because of the devastation left by Cyclone Winston they decided to hold this event to help the people of Ovalau.

“It’s not a beauty contest or charity event. We decided to get all the four tikinas of Ovalau together  and they sponsored some of the contestants,” Ms Murgan said.

“Last year we had four contestants, but for this year we have 11 contestants which is good because it shows the amount of support we are getting from the people.

“This event is to help the people of Ovalau, so the four tikinas of Ovalau have their own stalls and whatever they get goes back to them.

“This way we are helping them because they are still struggling after the devastation left by Cyclone Winston and they are very happy that we are supporting them.

“This is also the first time after a long time the chiefs from around here got together in an event which has been a positive sign.”

She said the crowd at the carnival was not big like last year but it was starting to pickup as the carnival progressed.

The carnival ends  tomorrow.
