Eleven contestants are now vying for the 2016 Vodafone Back to Levuka Carnival.

The carnival will once again see the people of Levuka converge at Nasau Park for a fun filled event after a lapse of 15 years last year.

Vodafone Fiji Limited, manager sponsorship, Adriu Vakarau said: “The carnival provides an opportune platform for these individuals to gain confidence and become ambassadors of their communities in bringing forth positive societal change.

“We have seen the positive benefits to the community through community projects undertaken from the funds raised through the festivals. We hope to reap the same benefits from the Levuka carnival to contribute back to the community,” Mr Vakarau said.

He said this year they have provide 11 young women the opportunity to take to the stage in a contest of beauty and brain with disseminating information and raising awareness on issues concerning our community and country.

“Vying for the crown, these contestants will utilise this stage to raise awareness and advocate on the theme.

“Together with the carnival organising committee and Levuka Town Council, we work towards taking the carnival to greater heights,” Mr Vakarau said.

The four day carnival was open on Wednesday by the Director of Heritage and Arts Lusiana Fotofili.

In an interview, Carnival organising committee chairperson Anne Murgan said because of the devastation left by Cyclone Winston they decided to hold this event to help the people of Ovalau.

“It’s not a beauty contest or charity event. We decided to get all the four tikinas of Ovalau together  and they sponsored some of the contestants,” Ms Murgan said.

The carnival ends  today.
