Rokotakala Still Shines At 38

Veteran Navua defender Seveci Rokotakala showed yesterday that he still has the class that once made him the country’s top left back.
Rokotakala scored Navua’s first goal when he smacked the ball to the roof the net as they went to beat Tailevu/ Naitasiri 2-0 during the Courts Inter District Championship’s Senior Division competition.
“I’m 38 years old now and I’ve settled into my farm in Navua,” he told SUNsports yesterday.
“For me it’s all about giving back to Navua Football where I had started my career. I’m here to play and encourage our young players and probably I’ve got a year left before I hang my boots.”
Rokotakala said he is hoping to see Navua return to the Super Premier division.
Similar sentiment was echoed by Navua football coach Nasir Hussain who said they were fortunate to still have Rokotakala in the team.
“He is a classy player and really stood out today,” he added.
Rokotakala was ably assisted by Vineet Chand, Netani Doli and Iliavi Katonibau.
Rokotakala played for the national football team and was a member of the Team Fiji men’s football side that won the gold medal at the 2003 South Pacific Games in Suva.
Tailevu/Naitasiri gave their all as they held Navua to a scoreless first half. Rokotakala drew first blood at the resumption of the second half and right towards the end it was a Inoke O’Connor strike that sealed Tailevu/Naitasiri’s fate.
