The Fijian Government handed over a fish-slicing machine that will help benefit more than 300 fishermen on the island of Kadavu on Wednesday.

Minister for Fisheries Semi Koroilavesau handed over the machine to the Kadavu Fishermen’s Association chairman Alikisadra Naisoro.

Mr Koroilavesau acknowledged the islanders for realising the potential in the fishing industry.

“Kadavu is Fiji’s biggest supplier of yaqona but yaqona will take three to five years to harvest. I am happy that the fishermen now understand that in one night of fishing they can rake in thousands of dollars worth of fish,” Minister Koroilavesau said.

The Minister said that one of the biggest challenges faced by his ministry was creating more awareness on financial literacy for fishermen so they can become commercial fishermen.

Mr Koroilavesau said fishermen around the country have started to realise the potential in the industry.

Mr Naisoro said association members have started to learn more about financial literacy and acknowledged the Minister for prioritising the needs of rural fishermen.
