The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport through the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) will be conducting an investigation into the suspected oil spill along the Lami foreshore.

This was confirmed by the Permanent Secretary Paul Bayly following concerns raised by residents in the area of “what seemed to be kerosene like substance” along the foreshore.

“A report has been received by my office from MSAF on the matter and I have issued a written instruction for MSAF to conduct an investigation,” Mr Bayly said.

MSAF chief executive officer John Tunidau said that actions are undertaken to respond and contain the substance.

The Authority is working in collaboration with key stakeholders such as Fiji Ports Corporation Limited and the Department of Environment to determine the cause of the suspected oil spill.
