Marist Brothers High School Year 12 student Eugene Kado yesterday scooped the top academic and sports awards for the school.

It was a proud moment for Mr Kado when he was awarded the Dux and Outstanding Sports Personality Award during the school’s annual prize giving function.

“I am so thankful to my parents and teachers of Marist Brothers High School for their support,” Mr Kado said.

“I never planned to receive Dux and the Outstanding Sports Personality Award but I am feeling happy.”

The 18-year-old said he was following in his grandfather and father’s footsteps to graduate from the Flagstaff school.

“Every day I try to do my best to better myself in what I do. I was only aiming to do my best in all my subjects,” he said.

He said he always gave his best shot in everything he did therefore he was able to balance his sports and academic work.

“It will very hard next year and make my parents and teachers proud of me,” he said.

He also received subject prizes scoring the highest marks in Maths, English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects.

Kado also won the awards for Best Science Student, six gold medals for the Fiji National Secondary Schools Swimming Championship, Best Swimming Award, Prize for participating in the Team Mathematics Competition and Class first prize.

His father James Kado said: “I am quite humbled and grateful towards people who have helped my son achieving the results he has achieved.

“He has been given a lot of support from his family, teachers and his friends.

“As parents we always try to reduce distractions around him and make sure that he gets quality time with his studies.”

Mr Kado said they would continue to support Eugene with his academic and sports endeavours.

His mother Millicent Kado said: “I am so proud with my son’s achievements.”

“Eugene worked really hard to achieve his goals and both our family and friends have supported towards his achievements.

“I will continue to support his dreams in the future.”

Marist Brother High School principal Ben Salacakau said: “Eugene is a very hardworking and dedicated student.”
