Kolinisau: I Differ With Ryan On ‘Ice’

The people of Lau gathered at Studio 6 Hotel in Suva yesterday to celebrate the Olympic achievements of Vodafone Fijian 7s rep Masivesi Dakuwaqa and captain Osea Kolinisau.
The duo were part of the Ben Ryan–coached side which won the rugby sevens gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics in August.
Kolinisau revealed to his people he disagreed with Ryan after Ryan dropped Isake ‘Ice’ Katonibau from the squad in June.
“At first I was disappointed with Ben when Katonibau was dropped from the squad,” he said
“After we broke camp I went home and called Ben why he dropped ‘Ice’.”
Decision
But Ryan told him the decision was for the betterment of the team and Kolinisau should trust his selection.
“Sometimes we think we are right but God has other plans,” Kolinisau said.
The skipper reminded his people how God blessed the team in Rio.
“We just need to give God the praise and thanksgiving for all our achievements,” Kolinisau said.
The Namuka-i-Lau man also shared a story about his dad’s (Pastor Tui Kolinisau) vision before the Rio Olympics rugby final.
“When we were still in Chile I called dad and asked him if he could pray for the team. Just before we left, we spoke again and he told me about his vision.
“He saw that a smiling Ben Ryan was being interviewed by reporters after the final. I only told Leone Nakarawa about this.
“We just have to thank the Lord for everything he has done to the team.”
Following the Lau provincial meeting yesterday, the duo were accorded a traditional ceremony of thanksgiving.
Cakova, Moala, Lau man Dakuwaqa dubbed ‘Sharkie’ also acknowledged his people for their support.
“Thank you for everything and thank you for your support.”
