Yesterday the Fiji Meat Industry Board told Parliament’s standing Committee on Economic affairs that they are seeking $5 to $10 million to upgrade their facilities.

While making submissions to the Committee at Parliament the FMIB chief executive officer Steven Ting said: “We looking to $5million to 10 m to upgrade our facilities.”

Mr Ting said some of the challenges they faced were the reviewing of the slaughter fees, urgent capital expenditure, review of the meat act, decline in cattle and pig numbers.

Also the relocation of FMIB, dual reporting, and inefficient Government system to process request were challenges highlighted by the board.

He highlighted that the board needs Government intervention to upgrade their facilities.

The standing Committee on Economic Affairs made up of Members of parliament Prem Singh, Viliame Gavoka, Vijay Nath, and Brij Lal heard the submissions and had assured the board on further talks with the Ministry of Public Enterprises and the Ministry of Agriculture about the challenges they faced in the next two weeks.
