Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama is expected to announce Fiji’s participation in the 2017 Buildcorp National Rugby Championship in Sydney today.

As the president of the Fiji Rugby Union, Bainimarama is also expected to finalise talks with SANZAR officials on Fiji’s hosting Super Rugby matches for the next three years.

FRU chairman Francis Kean, chief executive officer John O’Connor and Vodafone Flying Fijians head coach John McKee all flew to Sydney yesterday.

FRU and the Australian Rugby Union have been working on home and away games under a possible expanded NRC competition in 2017,

This is to boost local competition, similar to the Mitre 10 Cup in New Zealand, between the two countries.

According to ARU sources in Sydney, the Fijian team which will be made entirely of local players, which will be based in Suva.

Fiji will host four home games and play four away games in the proposed new competition format.

The new format will be a step up to the local competition which has been dominated by Nadroga over the years.

It will also provide good competition for local players to fight for a spot in the Flying Fijians.

The Buildcorp NRC is Australia’s only national competition.

The Buildcorp NRC is now entering the third year of competition having been conceived in 2013.

The 2016 competition has a slightly new look and feel with a new eight-team tournament played over nine consecutive weeks. Seven weeks of round robin before two weeks of finals.

The future of the NRC has been secured for the next five years, after the announcement of a new ARU broadcast deal in December 2015.

This year’s teams are: Brisbane City, Melbourne Rising, Perth Spirit, Queensland Country, Sydney Rays, UC Vikings and Western Sydney Rams.
