Life became difficult for Andhy Blake when he was diagnosed with depression in 2010.

The Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) TV producer and presenter spoke about his battle with depression at the World Mental Health Day celebrations at the St Giles Hospital in Suva, yesterday.

“In 2010 when I was diagnosed with depression, I did not know what depression was.

“I took Panadol and Nomo Pain tablets for the symptoms to go away,” he said.

Mr Blake said later he did research on what he was suffering from.

“I was on to 14 medications a day. I could not do simple things like brushing my teeth and tying my shoe laces, I refused to get out of bed and eat,” he said.

Mr Blake said he was addicted to unhealthy habits like drinking alcohol and smoking.

“I attempted suicide four times,” he said.

On his fourth suicide attempted, Mr Blake was saved by two people.

“They were angels for me and they rushed me to a hospital in Christchurch in New Zealand.

“When released I then decided to seek help,” he said.

Mr Blake was admitted at the psychiatrist Hospital in New Zealand for six weeks.

“I worked with professional team of doctors and expertise who knew about depression and knew what I was going through and I also was able to understand the causes of my depression,” he said.

Mr Blake is now advocating on mental health and he is urging people if they have faced any issues as such, to seek help.
