There is a need to assist Government as much as possible in putting together a progressive and conducive framework to allow all of us as a country to progress positively.

This was the message of the Fiji Institute of Accountants (FIA) president Jerome Kado during the FIA Leaders Conference at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva yesterday.

“The climate change, rural to urban drift, technological change and there are so many other major global changes that we are going through which becomes a challenge on how you properly progress,” he said.

“That’s why it’s then critical and the FIA are looking at these issues and has taken the initiative to try and work through these seminars to try and capture the thinking from relevant experts local and international to try and assist Government.”

This, he said, could be done by passing on this thinking process to move forward in a holistic manner as the acting Prime Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum had also indicated.

Mr Kado added they were addressing, initially the whole change in the review of the tax framework globally.

“What that would do is then you would need to look at you tax systems to adapt to the way in which the whole world is changing, so Fiji will need to change as well,” he said.

Mr Kado said it also could provide huge opportunities for Fiji in terms of revenue collection.

“But with that as well, what we are suggesting as the institute is that it gives government the opportunity to then look at appropriately changing our tax structure and framework for business so that is more conducive, progressive and sustainable as well.

“So Government gets its fair share of tax but business can take off and create in jobs etc.”

He added everyone could benefit as an economy, taking into consideration the environmental impact.
