Aspires to be a pharmacist

Holy Family Secondary School Dux Ruta Taratai, a Year 13 student was all smiles after receiving the award yesterday.

The nature of the school environment and the family spirit of the school motivated her to strive for greater heights.

The 18-year-old, originally from Rabi scored 330 out of 500 in the annual examination.

“I feel very excited and proud to get this prestigious award from a school where I have always felt accepted,” Ms Taratai said.

“In this school there is no air of discrimination as there are many students and this has encouraged me to achieve what I always hope for, the dux award.

“I wouldn’t have achieved this award without the support of my teachers and parents.”

Her father, Toanuea Taratai is a secondary school teacher and her mother, Tangiria Taratai is a laboratory superintendent at the Labasa Hospital.

The second eldest of four siblings and deputy head girl of the school scored 86 in Mathematics, 69 in English, 69 in Chemistry, 53 in Biology and 53 in Physics.

The aspiring pharmacist believes with an enabling school environment and a hardworking spirit anyone can achieve great things.

Mrs Taratai, 50, said she was proud of her daughter.

“She had always studied on her own without troubling us to supervise her,” Mrs Taratai said.

“My eldest daughter graduated from this school and two others are continuing their education here.

“We are happy to have our daughters in such a school that provides good education and moral support.”
