Fiji Hockey Federation president Dr Robin Mitchell is impressed with the development and progress of the sport in 2016.

He said the focus this year was development in schools which is evident with most district teams like Ba fielding students in the Inter-District Championship at the National Hockey Centre yesterday.

“Western teams Ba and Lautoka blooded young players most of whom took part in the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympics.

“We expected to see more youth players to come out from these two western teams.

Four men’s and three women’s teams participated in yesterday’s IDC.

World League round 2

Dr Mitchell has also confirmed they will decide this week on Fiji’s participation to the Hockey World League Round 2.

“We will be selecting a squad after this weekend, the first group will be playing in the Fiji Invitational tournament in December against Australia Country.

Oceania Cup

Fiji will focus on the 2017 Oceania Cup in October which is also a qualifier for the World Cup in 2018.

“The training squad will continue preparation until next year.

Hockey festival

FHF will be organising a festival in December to coincide with the Fiji Invitational tournament.

“We will have the Australia Country team participating and primary and secondary schools teams will also be competing,” Dr Mitchell said.
