Union Give Commitment To Dialogue With Government

The Fiji Trade Union Congress General Secretary, Felix Anthony, has given their commitment to dialogue with Government moving forward.
Mr Anthony have this assurance despite highlighting his concerns in some areas of the tripartite discussions between the FTUC, Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation and Government.
However, he said the way forward should be for all members to engage.
Mr Anthony was speaking at the 2016 Top Executives (TOPEX) Conference at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa on Denarau Island yesterday.
Amongst the delegates who were there during his presentation was the Attorney-General and acting Prime Minister, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
However, Mr Anthony left the conference before the presentation was done by Mr Sayed-Khaiyum when some of the issues raised by Mr Anthony were clarified.
Mr Anthony referred to the amended Employment Relations Promulgation.
“We can have the best laws, but if we don’t implement and enforce them, they are useless,” he said.
“What we see today is that while the laws have been implemented, putting them into practice is hard road.
“Employers have got used to just the way they have been. To change from that to a more consultative mode has been difficult for many employers.
“And in many cases, we see that there is a lack of preparedness even to engage with workers representatives in collective bargaining and to arrive at collective conclusion.
“This is a major challenge for all parties and for Government.”
