Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation believes too many industrial relations disputes that end up in tribunal hearing are based on management not following their own rules.

Chief executive Nesbit Hazelman emphasised this to executives at the 2016 Top Executives (TOPEX) Conference held over the weekend.

The two-day event which concluded on Saturday was held at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa on Denarau Island.

“Companies, business we have the right to manage. By manage I mean the rules and the laws,” Mr Hazelman said.

“Our experience on industrial relations in this country is a lot of disputes that end up in tribunals are based on management not following their own rules and they end up in tribunals and they often lose.

“It is important you escalate human resources and industrial relations to a strategic board.

“If you put your people central to your decision making process and you know the people are the biggest asset to your organisation.

“You hire them, your recruitment policies ensure that they are well remunerated.

“Most of these things come out and become problems because we don’t manage them properly.

TOPEX is a major event of the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation.

Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation is the country’s national private sector organisation.

Hundreds of businesses belong, ranging from the smallest to private companies to the largest public ones. Its Headquarters are in Suva.

Mr Hazelman heads a staff which includes a range of specialists.
