The construction of a community Police post at a dense residential subdivision in Kashmir, Lautoka by a businessman has been welcome by the Minister for Local Government, Housing, Environment, Infrastructure and Transport Parveen Bala.

The site which was inspected last week by the Commissioner of Police Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho is close to where a major carjacking incident recently took place.

Seven out of the eight men involved in the incident have been caught and have appeared in court.

“I had a discussion with the Commissioner of Police about the proposed site,” Mr Bala said.

He said he has asked Brigadier-General Qiliho to formally write to him with the request for the land to be given for a community Police post.

“I will present this to the Housing Authority board for their consideration.

“But as far I am concerned, if this is a community project, then why not? And I don’t see any problems with this.”

Mr Bala said he acknowledged the contribution being put in by Kashmir businessman Sanjay Lal, who will finance the building of the Police post.

Mr Lal had also promised Brigadier-General Qiliho he would pay the monthly water and electricity bills for the post.

Brigadier-General Qiliho had said they would be approaching the Housing Authority to consider giving community land at densely populated areas for the construction of Police posts.
