NSW Cup Bid Talks
Fiji based players are to play in next year’s NSW Cup bid if the deal comes through.

Negotiations are ongoing between Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) and Petero Civoniceva’s team over Fiji’s NSW Cup bid.

FNRL chief executive officer, Timoci Naleba, told SUNsports yesterday that talks are ongoing but chairman, Filimoni Vosarogo is the only person to talk on the issue.

Vosarogo was not available for comment as his mobile phones were switched off.

It is understood that one of the issues that is being discussed is on the sponsorships.

It is believed that FNRL wants to ensure that the Civoniceva’s group do not acquire the sponsorship of any company which is a direct competitor to their major sponsors.

Questions sent to the NSW Rugby League were not answered when this edition went to press.

In an earlier interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, League legend Civoniceva believes the admission of a Fijian team to the NSW Cup competition will be a stepping stone to a Pacific islands side joining NRL.

Talks have been ongoing with NSW Rugby League and NRL about a Suva-based team joining the second-tier NSW Cup competition in 2017.

The team consisting of local-based players will have a training base in Suva and play out of the ANZ Stadium.Civoniceva expects a number of rugby union stars to switch codes for the opportunity to showcase their talents to NRL clubs.

Like Papua New Guinea, which has entered a team in the Queensland Cup, it is hoped that Fiji– or even a combined Pasifika side – will gain entry to the NRL.

Fiji Rugby Union has already leapt ahead of Rugby League with a Fijian side joining Australia’s National Rugby Championship.
