The Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (HRADC) has strongly condemned alleged acts of Police brutality in Deuba.

It has also asked for an independent investigation.

Videos of the alleged brutality were posted on social media

HRADC’s director Ashwin Raj said: “Given the fact that it is the conduct of the Fiji Police, that is the subject of scrutiny. It is imperative that the findings are forwarded to the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission for an independent assessment.

“While we take full cognisance of the fact that the Fiji Police Force has its own investigative mechanisms, in order to bolster public confidence, the Police needs to demonstrate that these investigations were conducted in an independent manner without any conflict of interest.

“Fiji has made enormous strides through its strong and salutary constitutional provisions on freedom from cruel and degrading treatment, the ratification of the Convention Against Torture, the provision of a human rights wall in every Police station as well as its intentions to implement the First Hour Procedure and the video recording of interviews in which the Police has demonstrated leadership, these acts of violence, however, not only seriously taint the reputation of the Police Force and erode the trust of the public, but also does irreparable damage to Fiji’s reputation internationally.”
