The Ministry of Forests had submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Economy to purchase seven portable sawmills.

Permanent Secretary Samuela Lagataki said this would be at a cost of $265,745 to assist with the salvaging operations in the cyclone affected areas.

The Ministry of Forests technical support team with the Fiji Pine Trust management team have been supporting the salvaging operation of damaged pine trees along the Cyclone Winston path in the last few months.

He said the portable sawmills are currently based in Gau, Lakeba, Namoli, Dawasamu and two machines which are currently in their Nasinu Forestry Centre.

This, Mr Lagataki said will later be deployed to Koro, Ra and Tailevu.

“Currently operations in Dawasamu have been on a roll especially with the employment of local people from the village.”

According to Mr Lagataki, these people had undergone relevant chainsaw operation training and portable sawmill training conducted by the ministry.

Three portable sawmills are currently based at Nataleira and have already sawn a total of 46.7 cubic meters of pine sawn timbers.

This includes a total of 106 cubic meters of pine sawn logs.

This have been delivered to the Timber Utilisation Division in Nasinu, through the Government Timber and Manufacturing Account.

The Fiji Pine Trust supports the day to day management of the harvesting and milling operation by the pine landowners throughout Fiji.
