The Minister for Defence and National Security Ratu Inoke Kubuabola paid a courtesy visit to the Commissioner of Police Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho at the Fiji Police Headquarters in Laucala Beach yesterday.

In welcoming the Minister, the Commissioner of Police acknowledged the support of the Defence Ministry in light of the challenges faced daily by his officers.

An overview brief of the institution was also presented by the director planning Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Aporosa Lutunauga outlining the current and future direction of the Fiji Police Force, also focusing on international obligations highlighting the work of officers currently serving in various mission areas.

The Minister in addressing the Commissioner and members of his senior command group said he was particularly interested in strengthening advocacy work with regards to Community Policing.

“I had mentioned to the Commissioner that I’m very keen to do some advocacy especially in the area of targeted community policing and I can work with faith based organisations, NGO’s and different communities.

“From my own perspective I think there is a breakdown of our family values that we need to encourage faith based organisations to go back to the basics and teach families and parents to look after their children as they seem to be transferring that responsibility to the schools when it should be done at home.”

He added children need to be nurtured and guided by their parents at all times.

“Children should be taught the moral values that go with how to be a good citizen at home and not at school.”

The Minister assured the Commissioner of Police that he will always be ready to assist the Fiji Police Force.
