Fiji is ready to adopt the Saemaul Undong concepts to help consolidate its community-driven programmes.

The remarks were made by the Minister for Youth and Sports Laisenia Tuitubou yesterday during bilateral talks with Korea’s Minister for Interior Affairs Hong Yun-sik in Peyongcheng, South Korea.

“I want to thank the Korean government and say that Fiji was ready to learn from its village movement and harness the power and energy of the people,” he said.

He said Fiji was interested in adopting the SMU concepts to help consolidate its community driven programmes.

The concept of SMU is basically a movement seeking community development and modernisation. Of all things, it is a movement to escape from poverty. This ideal is not limited to individual lifestyles and living conditions, but encompasses the whole community.

Mr Tuitubou requested that Korea provide more opportunities for leaders, youths and women to attend training in Korea in areas of community development.

“There needs to be more training and awareness in Fiji,” Mr Tuitubou said.

The Ministersaid Korea could assist in areas of construction of training centres.

Mr Tuitubou said SMU could also be merged with existing structures and rural development agendas whereby youths and women could blend in to SMU principles of diligence, co-operation and self help.

In the bilateral discussions, Mr Tuitubou said the Fijian Government was committed for more opportunities in training in order for a more profound approach for mindset change.

Mr Hong said the Korean government was willing to assist developing countries and tailor make its assistance to suit the development agenda policy.

Mr Tuitubou said Fiji was ready to interact with the Korean government and to hear more from the Minister of Interior Affairs.
