The President, Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote, briefed her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the rehabilitation efforts in the wake of Tropical Cyclone Winston.

He was doing so, during an audience at Buckingham Palace during his current visit to the United Kingdom.

The Queen inquired about the progress of the relief effort and was given a broad outline by the President of what was being done to rebuild homes and schools in the affected areas.

The President also thanked her Majesty for her personal donation to the relief effort.

In what British officials described as a warm encounter that went almost twice as long as scheduled, the Queen also congratulated Fiji for its Rugby Sevens win against Great Britain at the Rio Olympics.

Her Majesty also shared some of her memories of previous visits to Fiji – the first in 1953.

Her Majesty thanked Fiji for joining the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy – an initiative aimed at conserving trees and forests and minimising the impacts of climate change.

She presented the President with a certificate of membership of the QCC.

The President was in Britain to open the largest exhibition of Fijian indigenous art at the University of East Anglia and to meet members of the Fijian community living in the United Kingdom.
