The Rip Curl Micro Grommet Series kicked off yesterday at Natadola. With 55 very young competitors on hand the surfing was frantic. Conditions were small but very clean and the grommets excelled.

Several standout performers were Johnny Vasea, Jone Sabasobo in the Under 14 boys and the Wakeham sisters Kayla and Kiesha. The competitors came from Matanivusi, Kulukulu, Nabila, Wailoaloa and everywhere in between.

Head judge Romeo McKellar said he was impressed by the overall performances especially as some have only been surfing less than 6 months.

Mr McKellar is excited about the future of the sport of surfing in Fiji with such great young talent coming through.

Round 2, is on November 5, at Swimming Pools, Namotu Island, and the winners will be announced after this event. There will also be a High Performance squad announced as well as a Development Squad.

The trials for the Fiji Stand Up Paddle and Prone paddle teams was held yesterday at Wailoaloa beach in Nadi.  The 5km race started at 4pm with a solid number of paddlers, able and female, vying for a Fiji team spot whilst the 18km marathon course is on this morning at 8am

This is all part of the preparation for next month’s ISA World SUP and prone championships which Fiji is hosting for the first time ever out at Cloudbreak. The Fijian team spots are yet to be finalised and there’s plenty of competition to obtain a spot.

This event will run from November 12-20. Contact FSA to get more details.
