Who’s Our New 7s Coach?

The announcement of the new Vodafone Fijian 7s head coach is going to be done before the end of the week.

This was confirmed yesterday by the Fiji Rugby Union as they call on the public for their patience as they go through the final stages of the process.

FRU board chairman, Francis Kean says, “the interviews and supporting processes for the appointment of our national sevens coaches have been concluded by the FRU Board.”

CONTENDERS

Former England rugby 7s skipper, Ben Gollings has indicated that he has applied to coach the Fijian 7s team. He revealed this during his interview with ABC Pacific Beat. Gollings is one of rugby sevens all time greats.

Last weekend, he came out of retirement to play for Davetalevu, at the annual Central Coast 7s tournament in Sydney, Australia. He is a close friend of sevens maestro Waisale Serevi as they on a number of occasions have visited other parts of the world in promoting the sport.

Another contender is current interim coach and trainer, Naca Cawanibuka, who has been working closely with former coach Ben Ryan during the World Sevens Series wins and the Rio Olympic Games gold medal win.

Another local coach who had applied but was not shortlisted is Epeli Lagiloa of the Tokatoka Westfield Dragons. Lagiloa was instrumental in the grooming of players Josua Tuisova, Vatemo Ravouvou, Pio Tuwai, Samu Saqiwa, Waisea Nacuqu, Josaia Wini and Masivesi Dakuwaqa, who were part of Ryan’s winning team during the series.
