Eileen Cikamatana was awarded the 2016 IWF World Youth Championship overall female best lifter in Penang, Malaysia on Tuesday.

The seventeen-year-old created history at the IWF World Youth Championship in Penang, Malaysia.

She won gold in the clean and jerk with a lift of 122kg which placed her third overall on the 215kg. This has made her the first Fijian to win a gold medal at a world championship.

Cikamatana had earlier finished fourth in the 93kg snatch, the same lifted by China’s third-placed Jing Tang who was awarded bronze due to a lighter bodyweight. Jing also won clean and jerk silver on 121kg, but this was only good enough for fourth overall.

Weightlifting Fiji president Chris Yee applauds the achievement of Cikamatana.

“A proud moment for Fiji and the Oceania countries,”Yee said.

She hails from Tavia village in Ovalau and she started lifting early last year under coach, Joe Vueti at the High Performance Centre in Baba.
