Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has thanked the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) for its contribution of a $3859 cheque to help victims of  Tropical Cyclone Winston.

Mr Bainimarama commended the contribution when Deputy Commissioner of Corrections, Jo Kulinidilo, handed over the cheque to the Prime Minister’s National Disaster Relief and Rehabilitation Fund. The handover was made at the Suva Corrections Centre office in Walu Bay.

The donation comes from the 50 per cent sale of artwork and paintings at the ‘Stronger than Winston Art Exhibition’ that was held last  August at the Tagimoucia Gallery in Korovou.

The exhibition, themed ‘Stronger than Winston: Resilience of Nature and Our People’, was a joint effort by the Wildlife Conservation Society and FCS, aimed to support rehabilitation efforts post-TC Winston and also created awareness on the protection of our natural resources.

“Thank you very much for your contribution to the rehabilitation fund. This will certainly go towards rebuilding the lives of those Fijians devastated by the cyclone,” Mr Bainimarama said.

Senior Superintendent Kulinidilo said the ‘Stronger than Winston Art Exhibition’ was made possible by the Wildlife Conservation Society and has extended FCS’s appreciation for their contribution towards the initiative.

FCS had earlier donated $15,000 towards Government’s ‘Adopt a School’ initiative in June – also from a painting from the corrections service that was sold in China.

SSPT Kulinidilo said through the donation to Government, FCS was glad to be contributing to nation building.

As part of the Fiji Corrections Service’s community engagement and civic responsibility, more than 200 inmates and 100 officers were deployed nationwide to carry out a massive clean-up of affected schools, villages, towns, cities and communities.
