A former Police officer charged with rape and indecent assault is being tried in the High Court in Suva.

It is alleged the 32-year-old raped a 15-year-old girl on February 13, last year.

The girl’s mother gave evidence yesterday and she told the court that on the night the alleged incident took place the accused had come to her home for a kava session.

The mother said after the kava session ended at around 3am the accused then asked her daughter for her phone, which she went and brought from her grandfather’s home.

Later that morning the mother heard a knock on her door and found the girl’s aunt and uncle at her doorstep.

They then told the girl’s mother that they had seen her daughter near a bridge. When the victim’s mother and father went down to the bridge, her daughter came to the mother, started crying and told her that the accused allegedly covered her mouth with his hand and had raped her.

In cross examination defence lawyer, Shalveen Singh, put it to the witness that her daughter allegedly had a sexual relationship with the accused three months before the incident was reported to the Police, to which the witness answered no.

Mr Singh further put to the witness that her daughter allegedly had sexual intercourse first in her house, to which the witness answered, she did not know.

He further stated to the witness that if she had not reported the matter their reputation would have been at stake, to which the witness answered, yes.

The accused will be giving evidence later today.
