The Solomon Islands women’s volleyball team have raised concerns regarding officials during the game against the Fiji Blues

This came after the Solomon’s fell short 3-1 in the Oceania Zonal Volleyball competition at the Vodafone Arena in Suva yesterday.

Fiji won the first set 26-24, but the visitors hit back winning second set 26-24. But the Fijians proved too strong winning the last two sets 25-23 and 25-20.

Solomon Islands assistant manager Norma Wopereis questioned the decision of appointing a Fijian umpire.

“A Fijian umpire officiating is unfair. We could have won the game,” she said.

“We come all the way from the Solomon Islands to participate, but when we saw what happened today this is unfair.

“In our next game against Cook Island we don’t want an umpire from the Solomon or Cook Islands to officiate.

“We want another umpire from another country. We knew we could have done better.”

FIVB referee’s instructor Dean Turner assured that the officials have been as fair as possible in every game and there had been no major issues raised so far during the tournament.

“We are trying to make sure that as much as possible that does not happen but unfortunately because of the numbers we’ve got there will be times that Fijian referees will officiate in their game,” he said.

“There are five Fijian teams playing and only four or five other teams so it’s very difficult to not have a Fijian referee to not officiate in a Fijian game because there are five Fiji team, six Fiji referees and only six other referees,” he said.

Meanwhile, Fiji Blues coach Teresia Vocevoce said despite the win she was not impressed with the outcome.

“We were expecting a win at the end but than our game plan had not worked out according to what we had planned.

The Fiji Blues play Fiji White at 1.30pm while the Solomon Islands will be playing against the Cook Islands at 11.30 today at the Vodafone Arena.
