Methodist Church in Fiji extends to all its fellow Fijians of the Hindu faith community, its well wishes on the upcoming occasion of the Diwali holiday.

“The fact that we live in a country, that since independence has not only acknowledged the different faith communities, but also celebrates together our diverse experiences and expressions of faith, is proof that Fiji, despite our many differences can be one nation,” said Methodist Church President, Rev. Dr. Tevita Nawadra Banivanua.

“The triumph of light over darkness, good over evil and life over death are themes that are also understood and celebrated by Christians who believe that Jesus the Christ is the Light of the World and that we are all called to shine the light of God’s unconditional

love and kindness in the world through our actions.”

“Such Divine Light has the potential to shine through the shadows of ignorance which keep us apart, shining its beams on our commonalities, our common humanity, our common struggles, and our common future,” said Rev. Dr. Banivanua.

“As we all enjoy the lights, fireworks, food and fellowship of this national holiday, let us all celebrate the triumph of the human spirit over adversity and join to build and strengthen our relationships between our communities and one another as our part in

making Fiji, once again, „the way the world should be.”

Rev. Dr. Banivanua’s sentiments are echoed by Church General Secretary, Rev. Dr.

Epineri Vakadewavosa who said that as a public holiday in Fiji, all Fijians had an opportunity to share in the festive atmosphere and celebrate our cultural diversity.

“Jesus Christ calls all of us to „let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (Gospel of Matthew 5:16).”

“Around the world today, we see the darkness of humankinds inhumanity, a general lack of compassion, morality, justice and peace. We have experienced many shadows recently, from the impact of climate change to increase in violent crime, from robbery to gender-based violence and child abuse.

The triumph of good over evil and light over darkness celebrated at Diwali reminds us all of the need for every Fijian to shine the light of righteousness, compassion and friendship in our homes, our communities our country. Let us share our own lights, so that the world may see it. “
