The festival of lights, “Diwali” is about building bonds, appreciating varied perspectives and celebrating unity in diversity. It signifies the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance and hope over despair.

It is an opportunity for us to reflect on our lives and the changes we can bring about to become better individuals, its calls for simple changes in our lives, the way we see ourselves and the way we treat our families.Diwali cultivates courage and inspiration for everyone to work in unity for national prosperity.

We are certainly privileged to live in a country such as ours, we have so much to celebrate.

Given the cultural diversity, there alot of opportunities to learn from each other and strengthen unity and broaden our knowledge and appreciate each other’s cultures that allows us to have a very peaceful coexistence amongst our societies.

Regardless of whichever culture we belong to, we need each other and we need be proud of that and that is the very Fiji this Government is trying to create, One Fiji One people.

Let this Diwali be a season for us tomove forward in love and unity, allowing the spirit of peace and harmony into our lives. Let’s all work together to advocate unity among each other and continue to nurture the values of respect, gratitude and compassion in our daily lives.

And in February this year, when we were struck by Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston most of us thought that the time taken to rebuild would definitely not allow us to celebrate the way we always celebrate.

But as Fijians we are known to be resilient and as we go along we see people preparing for this festival, it shows the strength that our people have to overcome challenges that we come across in our lives.

As we try to rebuild the lives, I would humbly like to appeal to those of us who have enough to go out of our way to see how we can make a positive difference in the lives of those children and families who have lost everything in TC Winston.

As we light our Diya’s this Diwali may we be reminded of the many homes and hearts that we can reachout to by providing a helping hand to those that genuinely need our assistance.

This is a special occasion that brings with it the opportunity to build trust, peace, honesty and unity among all.

In this Festival of Lights, may we all find peace, joy and renewed commitment to caring for each other.

This is the key message of all our religions that we must all embrace and commit to build a better, unified nation and stronger Fiji.

I wish you all a very happy and prosperous Diwali.
