Early Detection Vital, Says Rauto

Former journalist and survivor Mary-Johns Rauto on Wednesday emphasised on the importance of early detection and regular check-ups at any signs of discomfort.

“Her story moved a lot of people and has encouraged the Commission to continue to show support for such a worthy cause,” said Fiji Commerce Commission official Christina Kumar.

Ms Rauto was sharing her story as a cancer survivor during the Fiji Commerce Commission inaugural Pinktober morning tea in support of the Breast Cancer Awareness month.

“There was tremendous support from major stakeholders, representatives from government ministries, non-governmental organisations and most importantly from members of the Fiji Cancer Society and cancer survivors,” Ms Kumar said.

“All proceeds from the morning tea will be given to the Fiji Cancer Society as a token of appreciation for what they do for our society and the Commission envisage that this will become an annual event in the Commission calendar.”

In the welcoming message, the Commission Chair Joann Young was passionate about her plea to giving to society and making a change in people’s lives and encouraged to raise awareness on the necessity for self examination and the need to seek medical attention for any doubt after self examination.

“The Fiji Cancer Society was grateful and overwhelmed with the turn out today and appreciated the support from the Commission,” Ms Kumar said.

“The Fiji Cancer Society spoke on the importance of Early Detection, the need to seek medical assistance or advice from the Fiji Cancer Society should they feel any sign of symptoms of cancer.

“The Fiji Cancer Society also spoke on the different types of cancer and that Cancer is the third leading cause of death in Fiji.”
