Israel Hands Over 12 Generators

The Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) Inia Seruiratu yesterday received 12 solar portable generators from the government of Israel to help assist victims of Tropical Cyclone Winston.

While receiving the generators, Mr Seruiratu on behalf of the Government acknowledged the work carried out by Israel to the victims of Cyclone Winston especially for the reconstruction of Vuma Village in Ovalau.

Mr Seruiratu said the work together with the donation strengthens the bilateral relations between the two countries that was established years ago.

“We look forward to the continued co-operation not only in disaster response but in agriculture as well,” he said.

Mr Seruiratu highlighted some of the lessons learnt by the country after Cyclone Winston and explained that the Government looks forward to Israel’s experience so that the Fiji NDMO can continue to excel in building resilience for the people.

Israeli Pacific Island Adviser, Yaron Sultan-Dadon said the donation reflected the partnership between the two countries and that the solar kits would allow a family to live normally even if there is no electricity around.

“‘Normal’ today is not just food, it’s also about communication with the world,” Mr Sultan-Dadon said.

“The solar kits would allow a family in an event of a natural disaster like cyclone to ask for help and to remain informed. It allows a family using it to live with dignity.”

The solar kits will be distributed to the four Divisional Commissioners who will then distribute it according to the needs of Winston affected communities and families.
