Yacata Islanders will soon relocate as a precautionary measure against sea level rise and the threat of more natural disasters.

One of the worst hit communities during Tropical Cyclone Winston, a number of houses lined beside the village’s beachfront were swept away by the waves.

Turaga ni Koro Peniqusa Taione said they were also adhering to Government’s advice as they had been one of the villages recommended to relocate.

“About five houses beside the sea were completely destroyed during TC Winston and we had finally decided to relocate our village,” Mr Taione.

He said the site located about 300metres from the beach was set up to protect homes and villagers from the waves.

Aloesi Ruci was one of the people whose home was swept away during TC Winston said the idea of relocation was a timely one.

“I had woken up to the waves entering my home and reaching up to my bed,” Ms Ruci said.

“I had managed to escape but I watched as the waves and the wind carried my whole house to the sea.

“This is why I believe that the motion for relocation would benefit us in so many ways.”

The 38-year-old added that TC Winston was one of the worst she had come across while on Yacata Island.

Mr Taione said: “This site is beside our community hall and we are yet to start relocating.”

“Most of us are still waiting for Government’s assistance on the housing scheme so when it arrives then we will start the move.”

There are a total of 45 houses on Yacata Island.
