Apolonia Vaivai won gold at the Commonwealth Championships in Penang, Malaysia on Friday night.

She lifted 93kg in the snatch and 115kg in the clean & jerk for a total of 208kg in the women’s 75kg weight category.

Weightlifting Fiji president Chris Yee is overwhelmed with the performance.

“This is a fantastic achievement for Fiji,”Yee said

“This is the second year in a row that Vaivai has been the Commonwealth champion.”

“Fiji won a total of 2 gold 3 silver and 4 bronze medals over the past week, in what is the best ever performances by Weightlifting Fiji at any international competitions in its 55-year history.”

Eileen Cikamatana won three silver medals in the Commonwealth Championships in the women’s 69kg weight category.

She won the silver in Youth, Junior and Open categories to back her gold and bronze medal performances at the World Youth Championships.

Young Taniela Rainibogi competed very well in the Junior 85kg category.

He lifted 118kg in the snatch and 140kg in the Clean and Jerk for a total of 258kg.

He competed very well and made a gallant attempt to lift to lift 150kg in his final lift and was almost successful, as he gave it his all to try and secure the bronze medal.

The team returns to Fiji today.
