Media reports that Fiji took part in elections at the United Nations yesterday for membership of the UN Human Rights Council are wrong. Fiji was not a candidate this year.
Six votes were recorded for Fiji in this year’s elections but they were invalid votes cast against other candidates, which is a regular practice in the UN system. Fiji was not formally part of the process at all.

Fiji will be formally standing for the UN Human Rights Council in 2017.
