A Diwali celebration with a difference was held on the Levuka waterfront on Friday night for the people and visitors of Levuka.

To brighten up the celebration more, the landing craft St Mary was also anchored in the harbour with the festivity lights on the boat.

This was organised by managing director of Venu Shipping Limited Ben Naidu in conjunction with the chief executive of Levuka Town Council Josese Rakuita.

Mr Naidu said they will try and have this event yearly.

“We are trying to promote some other activities, to create some interest for visitors coming to our shores,” he said.

“This is just a start. Apart from Diwali, we will try and have other celebrations throughout the year together with the towns people.

“The main idea is to promote economic growth in the town of Levuka.”

Mr Naidu added there are so many business houses which are associated with Levuka and would like to be a part of it to promote the town’s growth further.

Meanwhile young and old converged on the waterfront with tents, tables and chairs provided by the Levuka Town council.

The music was provided by Mahesh Vithal who also sang a few numbers to liven up the celebration.

Children were provided with sweets and soft drinks while the adults set around with the traditional drink yaqona, mingling around and throwing ideas for a bigger celebration for next.

A display of fireworks was done by the crew of Venu Shipping Company to entertain children and present guests. Some giveaways were also distributed to children by the company.
