The driver of the vehicle allegedly involved in the death of Merewai Vunisa Balekolo and her six-year-old daughter last Saturday is still in Police custody.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed yesterday that no one had been charged for the fatal accident.

She said the 21-year-old driver was alleged to have been driving a vehicle with no driver’s licence.

“He is still being questioned,” Ms Naisoro said.

The tragic accident happened at Nanuku settlement in Ra, along the Kings Highway as the group was travelling to Lautoka from Matawailevu for a wedding when the incident occurred.

Ms Naisoro said the driver and a passenger who was sitting in the front seat had sustained injuries.

“The passenger is still admitted at the Rakiraki hospital,” she said.

Police are advising motorist to take precautionary measure while on the road at all times during this long weekend.

Meanwhile, the road death toll stands at 46 compared to 55 for the same period the last year.
