The second Rip Curl Micro Grommet Series is expected to be bigger and better than the last one.

This Saturday our young surfers will head to the Namotu Island swimming pools.

With a total of 56 surfers taking part in the Under-14, U12 and U10 grades, Fiji Surfing head coach Ian Portingale said, they are looking for some good surfs this weekend.

“The last series, the surf was not as big, they were fairly small but this weekend we are  expecting some good surfs,” Portingale said.

“We have all the same surfers from the first Grommet Series and now that the surfers have had a taste of the first event, they will be looking to improve their placing in this weekend’s event.

“The surfers know what they have to improve on and what to do, so we are expecting a good Grommet Series.”

At the end of the event, surfers will be chosen to join the development squad and High Performance squad but Portingale has assured that those who do not make the cut will not be forgotten.

“Those who do not make the development and high performance squad, we will be setting them up for on-going training,” he said.

“Fiji Surfing will be working with coaches and once these junior surfers go back to their clubs, the coaches we have trained will assist and develop them further.”

The second Grommet Series will be the last for the year and Portingale said they are happy with the turnout and talents discovered at these events.

“I am very happy with this year’s events, there are not a lot of Grommet Series for the junior surfers but this has done wonders,” Portingale said.

“We have unearthed a few talents and we have been fortunate to grow the grass root number in terms of surfing and hoping that this will grow as we want to maintain this for next year as well and make it an annual event.”

The Rip Curl Micro Grommet Series will start at 9:30am.
